Lady Monarchs Fall To Hampton Bays
By Rich Smidt
The Bishop McGann/Mercy varsity softball team lost its third straight game last Friday afternoon, falling 8-1 at home to a red-hot Hampton Bays squad.
Sammi Krantz picked up the win for the Lady Baymen, striking out a season-high 11 Lady Monarchs batters while walking only one and allowing five total hits. Alyssa Lanino provided plenty of pop by going 2-for-4 with four RBI and Marian Leeman went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Two days earlier, Mercy was nearly no-hit by Mattituck's Annie Stype as the Lady Tuckers cruised to a 9-0 victory. Stype, Mattituck's ace pitcher, struck out six batters to record her second shutout of the season. Mattituck's bats were led by Stephanie Pesce (2-for-3, home run, two runs scored, two stolen bases) and Marisa Viola (home run).
The Monarchs are currently tied for second place in League VIII with Pierson as both teams hold identical 4-4 records. Mercy's last win came against the Lady Whalers on April 11 as Claire Wittmeier (2-for-3, three RBI) helped the Monarchs pad their lead by delivering a two run-single in the fourth inning that put her team in front 4-1.
Mercy would go on to win the game 5-2. Pitcher Grace Chilton also starred in that contest, going 3-for-4 at the plate and stealing three bases.
