Greenport's historic harbor will show signs of new life this season as tall ships head to the village to dock at the brand-new Mitchell Marina, which launches its kick-off season next month.
Greenport Village Trustee William J. Mills, III reported at last week's work session that the Greenport Business Improvement District, in an effort to generate business before the busy summer season, has arranged for the tall ship The Providence to visit Greenport on June 9-11.
The ship will be tied to the East Dock, and will be open to the public on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Private sails will be offered on Saturday mornings, at a fee of $25/per person.
The tall ship The Bluenose is also scheduled to visit Greenport on June 14-16.
In addition, the village will welcome six yard patrol training ships from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis from July 10-13.
Mills said welcoming tall ships to Greenport as a place to tie up and undergo crew changes, as well as guest exchanges, is the realization of a long-term goal: "That was the intention when we built the East Pier."
