Blue Waves Stay Undefeated

Blue Waves Stay Undefeated

The Riverhead varsity softball team kept its unbeaten streak intact last Wednesday with a 5-3 win against Deer Park. Amanda Riley and Melissa Corwin each had stellar contributions at the plate as each hitter collected two hits.

Riley (2-for-3) drove home two of the Lady Blue Waves' runs while Corwin (2-for-4) also had an RBI as Riverhead improved to 3-0 in Suffolk County's League IV.

A day earlier, senior pitcher Laurie Edwards struck out 13 North Babylon batters in six innings to earn the 50th win of her varsity career as she single-handedly led Riverhead to a 13-1 victory.

Edwards, a five-year starter who won 12 games last season and allowed one earned run per start while striking out 135 opposing batters in League III, went 4-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and a season-high 5 RBI. Jackie Zilnicki, the 2005 League III Rookie of the Year, collected three hits in five at-bats, scored four runs, and drove in two.

In the Waves' League IV opener back on March 31, the bats of Riley (2-for-3, 2 runs scored) and Lauren Zilnicki (2-for-3, RBI) coupled with Edwards's solid pitching sparked Riverhead to a 5-2 win over Bellport.

Sprinkled in with the Waves' (5-0 overall) three league wins this season have been non-league triumphs over both Westhampton and William Floyd. Edwards tossed a two-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts in Riverhead's 3-0 win over the Lady Hurricanes on March 28.

The Waves host Hauppauge today at 3 p.m. and then take a five-day break in their season schedule, which resumes next Tuesday at Hills West.
