Girls Hoops: Riverhead Righting The Ship

Riverhead ascended to the state finals last season, but the Blue Wave found the going rough at the beginning of this season.

However, the team appears to be hitting its stride now. The North Forkers edged Smithtown West 60-54 in a hard fought home game Thursday. Naysha Trent tallied 22 point; Shanice Allen had 17 and Dezare Brown 10 for the winners.

It was the third straight win for the locals, who took over first place in League III with a 5-1 mark. Riverhead is 6-4 on the season. Newfield comes to town tomorrow for a 4 PM match-up; the Wave travel to West Islip Tuesday.

Southampton annihilated Mercy at home Friday 51-11. Kesi Goree with 11 and Cassidy Guida with 10 led a balanced attack. The Mariners ran their League VII mark to 5-0 and are 7-3 for the season. The locals play at Center Moriches Friday at 7 PM.

Southold/Greenport held onto first place in League VIII despite losing 71-62 at Hampton Bays Friday. Alexis Fotopoulos exploded for 22 points for the winners, and Haley Wood added 10. Andrea Tufano snatched 13 boards. Nicole Busso had 20 for the losers, and Justina Babcock and Melissa Rogers each had 10. Hampton Bays is 1-4 in the league and 2-7 overall. Southold is 4-1 in league action, 5-4 overall. The Settlers take a ferry over to Shelter Island Friday for a 4 PM affair. The Islanders are 2-3 in the league and 4-6 overall.

East Hampton is in the League VI title hunt. A 49-36 home court victory over Amityville increased Bonac's league record to 3-2. Jackie Messemer had the hot hand, tallying 21 points. Kaelyn Ward, who scored her 1000th varsity point last week, added 16. The locals, who are 6-3 overall, travel to Mount Sinai tomorrow afternoon.
